STARTING A COFFEE SHOP - PART 2

CONGRATULATIONS – Your nearly there with all your planning. You've done all your homework. You’ve found the perfect premises for your new venture. You are about to sign on the dotted line. You’re setting a date for your Grand Opening already. Now I apologise in advance if the following information seems obvious. However, I can assure you from experience that a number of key points are not always considered. I’ve had clients who are opening a Coffee Shop and only considered getting their coffee machine a few days before opening! At this point you may not think this a problem but if you read on you will see why this could mess up your opening day plans. There is an old business saying that states:

“IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU PLAN TO FAIL”

  • Do you require A3 Planning Permission for premises? If so, this can take on average 8 weeks assuming there are no issues raised.

  • Which ever type of machine you choose and have your heart set on, remember: Some makes and models are not always readily available. Some models or configurations are made to order. Some are not kept as “stock” by coffee companies or even manufacturer’s UK Depots. They have to be imported from the Continent. There is only one make of Commercial Espresso Machine that is made in the UK!

  • If you decide to Lease equipment, then you should allow extra time for the financial process to take its course. Although Leases can be accepted in a matter of hours, there are documents that need to be sent to you. These have to be signed correctly by all concerned and returned to the Lease Company. It is only then that the authorisation to proceed is given to your chosen equipment provider.

  • Depending upon your choice of machine, various services have to be in place before an install can take place. Some types of machine will only need a standard 13amp plug socket. Others will need specialised power supplies, i.e. 20amp, 30amp or 3 Phase in some cases. There are some you can “Hand Fill” with water, others will need to be “Plumbed in” to a cold water supply in close proximity to the machine location. All of these services, in most cases, will be your responsibility to get installed. So if the required services are not already available, you will need to build this work into your schedule.
